Animal husbandry definition
Animal husbandry is the agricultural practice of domestication of animals, their breeding and their care. With the domestication of cattle, their husbandry has been practiced for thousands of years. Looking after a few cattle and their husbandry has grown from taking a few of them to pasture lands to having ranch with thousands of herds with systematized and mechanized management techniques. Apart from cattle, sheep, bees, horses, poultry and fish come under it.
The definition of the term 'Animal Husbandry' according to different dictionaries is cited below.
1. The definition by Collins English Dictionary is "the science of breeding, rearing, and caring for farm animals".
2.The definition by Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary is "the methods employed in keeping domestic animals in such a way as to avoid their abuse but so as to provide food, fiber, entertainment and company at levels described as love, companionship, physical guidance, protection, shepherding".
3.According to The American Heritage Dictionary the definition of husbandry is "The branch of agriculture concerned with the care and breeding of domestic animals such as cattle, hogs, sheep, and horses".
4.THe definition by Britannica Concise Encyclopedia is "Controlled cultivation, management, and production of domestic animals, including improvement of the qualities considered desirable by humans by means of breeding".
