Global scenario of agricultural production

Main topic:Global scenario
Currently world production of food is comfortable. Though there are weak economic growth conditions in the advanced European economies and their cascading effects on the other fragile dependent economies of developing nations, the world food situation is still comfortable.

In the forecasts for 2012–13 the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) predicts global wheat production at 675.1 million tonnes. There will be a shortfall of 25 million tonnes, considering the previous year. The prices are also expected to have very marginal increase.

In the forecasts for 2012–13 for rice production, it is predicted that there may be a marginal decline in rice production due vagaries in monsoon and the later floods in Asian countries.

The production of coarse grains including maize is expected to increase. However the prices may also firm up due to increasing demand from the feed production sector. The production of pulses and oil seeds and oils is also expected to increase and the price situation may be moderate.

Agricultural trade has started playing a larger role in catering to the food needs of developed and developing nations. Agricultural exports will become a large source of foreign exchange for many nations. The projections on the recent effrots on climate change mitigation, forecast an appreciable increase in carbon sequestration by agricultural soils due to improved agricultural practices and a marginal decline in the contribution of agriculture to global warming.
